“I Love You In Silence ” – Without Words
Words are not always necessary when we want to express our feelings and affection. Non-verbal communication is a powerful way to communicate, and it makes it possible to touch another person’s soul without words. On the other hand, non-verbal communication is less conscious than verbal communication, and therefore both more reliable and more difficult to manipulate. In addition to this, it must be borne in mind that, at best, words do not reveal more than 10% of the information we want to share.
We inherited many masterpieces from our 80s, at least one of which is in film form. By this we mean a full-length film called Children of a Lesser God, in Finnish called Wordless Love . William Hurt starred James and Marlee Martin Sarah. Marlee Martin even won the Oscar for Best Actress for her original role.
This is the story of a deaf-mute woman who, contrary to all expectations, starts a romantic relationship with her special teacher and falls in love with her. This story invites us to reflect on what we are all able to communicate through our body language. It also reminds us how our body language best reflects what we are as human beings.
The key scene, which really brings out the power of their sign language communication, is filmed by the beach house pool. In this exchange of messages, the attraction they feel towards each other is clearly highlighted. Words and verbal communication are non-existent but also unnecessary.
More than words: the power of non-verbal communication
However, to return to that scene we described where we do not hear a word, we are witnessing a passionate debate. James asks questions with honest gaze, and Sarah answers them with sincere caresses. We see that nothing is left to be questioned or misunderstood. We see that the feelings are real.
The truthfulness of the gazes
The visual system is most closely connected to our emotions. When we want to hide our feelings or prevent others from interpreting our words, we turn our gaze away.
Our gaze can reveal us, leaving us without escape when another person’s gaze is attached to us. We feel both naked and trapped at the same time, and so we remain… speechless! With a single gaze, we can charm, make another person feel like a fool or the most important individual in the world, inspire, or capture the other person’s heart forever.
When someone loves us, and we also love him, his gaze comes to life with butterflies in our stomachs that don’t wake up from anyone else’s gaze. We can find the best refuge by venturing to look at someone up close. In that open exchange of gazes, we can receive a tremendous amount of understanding. On the other hand, in it we can also feel like a stranger, as if we were strangers in a dull world. In both cases, its power is enormous.
A glance created at the right time, accompanied by an unexpected caress, can pierce another person’s heart deeper than words would ever be able to. With the power of a single gaze, we are able to jump over any obstacle or constraint because it allows us to express our truest and most intimate inner being.
Feeling is more important than listening
Sarah will never be able to say, “I love you,” but probably James doesn’t need to hear that either. No doubt he already knows that, because Sarah’s gestures, the gaze, and the glances she created for her leave no room for doubt. It is about sending an open, clear and sincere message with the intensity conveyed by the body.
This shows how natural it is to express our feelings without words or compliments to us. It shows the truth, the real attraction, the permanence. This is conveyed through great passion, sincerity, and truthfulness. It arouses in the viewer a great desire to learn to communicate in this quiet, yet powerful, and at the same time inviting way.
I encourage you to open your eyes, express your innermost being with the openness of your gaze, grasp the loved one with both hands, and keep him or her good. Don’t drop your gaze, hide your hands from his eyes, or resist your smile. Love in silence, and “I love you” messages go without a word in a thousand different ways. Your loved one has already been able to interpret those tender messages, and words may not be needed.
